Shylock: The Marginalized Jewish Hero——Understanding the Religious-Cultural Dimension of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice

Abstract: By applying the contemporary western cultural studies theory, this essay intends to re-examine Shakespeare's classic comedy The Merchant of Venice from a religious-cultural perspective and aims at providing a new cultural interpretation of the traditional villain Shylock. It will be argued that Shylock is a marginalized Jewish cultural hero, who staunchly identifies himself with the Jewish culture and heroically asserts his Jewish identity in resisting the Christian cultural hegemony.

Keywords: Shylock; marginalization; Jewish; hero
